چکیده

Satellite ocean color data from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) were used to examine distributions of chlorophyll concentration within the Southern Ocean for the period October 1997 through September 1998. Over most of the Southern Ocean, mean chlorophyll concentrations remained quite low (,0.3–0.4 mg m). Phytoplankton blooms where chlorophyll concentration exceeded 1.0 mg m were observed in three general areas, which included coastal/shelf waters, areas associated with the seasonal sea ice retreat, and the vicinity of the major Southern Ocean fronts. These chlorophyll distribution patterns are consistent with an iron-limited system. Mean chlorophyll concentrations from SeaWiFS are compared with values from the coastal zone color scanner (CZCS). The SeaWiFS global chlorophyll algorithm works better than the CZCS in Southern Ocean waters. Primary production in the Southern Ocean was estimated with the vertically generalized production model of Behrenfeld and Falkowski [1997]. Annual primary production in the Southern Ocean (.308S) was estimated to be 14.2 Gt C yr, with most production (;80%) taking place at midlatitudes from 308 to 508S. Primary production at latitudes .508S was estimated to be 2.9 Gt C yr. This is considerably higher than previous estimates based on in situ data but less than some recent estimates based on CZCS data. Our estimated primary production is sufficient to account for the observed Southern Hemisphere seasonal cycle in atmospheric O2 concentrations.

Dust Storms and their ecological impacts on Chlorophyll distributions over the Persian Gulf (1997-2007)

The Persian Gulf due to its position in subtropical belt is influenced by many intense dust storms during the year. The periodic dust events are expected to affect significantly the ecological condition of the Persian Gulf. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of mineral dust on the primary production in phytoplankton communities of Persian Gulf. Satellite data from Se...

Upper ocean ecosystem dynamics and iron cycling in a global three-dimensional model

[1] A global three-dimensional marine ecosystem model with several key phytoplankton functional groups, multiple limiting nutrients, explicit iron cycling, and a mineral ballast/ organic matter parameterization is run within a global ocean circulation model. The coupled biogeochemistry/ecosystem/circulation (BEC) model reproduces known basin-scale patterns of primary and export production, biog...

Three improved satellite chlorophyll algorithms for the Southern Ocean

[1] Remote sensing of Southern Ocean chlorophyll concentrations is the most effective way to detect large-scale changes in phytoplankton biomass driven by seasonality and climate change. However, the current algorithms for the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS, algorithm OC4v6), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS-Aqua, algorithm OC3M), and GlobColour significa...

Mining a Sea of Data: Deducing the Environmental Controls of Ocean Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll biomass in the surface ocean is regulated by a complex interaction of physiological, oceanographic, and ecological factors and in turn regulates the rates of primary production and export of organic carbon to the deep ocean. Mechanistic models of phytoplankton responses to climate change require the parameterization of many processes of which we have limited knowledge. We develop a ...

Estimation of phytoplankton production from space: current status and future potential of satellite remote sensing.

A new generation of ocean colour satellites is now operational, with frequent observation of the global ocean. This paper reviews the potential to estimate marine primary production from satellite images. The procedures involved in retrieving estimates of phytoplankton biomass, as pigment concentrations, are discussed. Algorithms are applied to SeaWiFS ocean colour data to indicate seasonal var...
